Visiting with someone last night and She said,
"I used to work with special needs kids in a school. I had a few that had Down Syndrome. One was so sweet, and then there was another little girl who was a "more typical" down syndrome child. She was really pushy and didn't listen well."
There was more to the conversation and she wasn't trying to say anything bad... but I couldn't help the growing knot in my gut.
Why do we put labels on people? What is typical anyway?
People with Down Syndrome are just as much individuals as anyone else! They are unique and have different personalities.

There is no "typical" Down syndrome child...of course only us parents with a kid with Ds know this to be true. I am sick of people telling me Russell is always so happy...because he is NOT...Honestly he can be quite bratty and I see he has a bit of a temper...He is a "typical" CHILD...who happens to have Down syndrome.
I totally agree! And after the play group the other day I was talking about this with my husband because we had a room full of kids with down syndrome and they were each individuals and each different!
Kathy I couldn't agree more and thanks to you people are becoming more aware of that! Your blogs is so special and inspirational, I so love reading it! I just wish I saw you more often. I am afraid that Kyla and Hennessy would burn either of our houses down!
Hey Kathy, I love that I am not the only one in Canada. I sometime just want to say to those people, "uh, I have bigger plans for my daughter than her being a nice person, or a bagger at Safeway. But thanks anyway."
