Let them be little...

The song on my blog goes perfect with this post. I have been thinking about this a lot lately.

Why is there such a push for our little ones to grow up?

Why do we feel the need to have the earliest potty trained kid on the block, or the one who can read before anyone else.

Why does it matter that our older children still want to sit on mom's lap and who cares if your 18 month old prefers a bottle to a sippy at bedtime.

Why do we even compare our child to anyone Else's child?

When did this competition start and is it really all that healthy for our kids?

In nursing we learn and talk a lot about the psychologist Erikson.
Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development has eight distinct stage, each with two possible outcomes. According to the theory, successful completion of each stage results in a healthy personality and successful interactions with others. Failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete further stages and therefore a more unhealthy personality and sense of self.

Why don't we let them be little? They are going to be adults for a long time, and they will get all the stress that goes with it! I understand that every kid is different, but shouldn't we listen to the cues that our own child gives us, instead of feeling bad that they aren't where another kid is?

Just an example of my husband...

He wasn't a very good student when he was young. He hated school and struggled with almost every subject. His mom tells me about this all the time. It took him a lot longer than other kids to learn how to read etc... It wasn't that he wasn't smart enough, it was that he wasn't interested in it and therefore didn't try very hard. Well, he eventually graduated with a bachelors degree from a very good business school. He is a very smart person!

Now lets take me... I loved school as a kid. I loved my teachers and they loved me! I was an overachiever. At one point they wanted me to skip up a grade at another point they wanted to put me in a special class for gifted children. Well, as an adult... although I still think I am smart and have a fairly decent IQ score... I hate school! I hated nursing school, it was a pain. I couldn't stand to read those darn textbooks :)It wasn't that I wasn't smart enough, it was that I wasn't interested! I finished, but not at the top of my class. I think I got burned out!

I really don't know if these examples really add up to anything except the fact that, I don't know if it is the wisest thing in the world to want our kids to be doing things before they are mentally ready. Eventually they all catch up in the end.

Lets focus more on.... Loving them, Encouraging them, building their self esteem, giving them hope and supporting them in all they do.

Baby Ehlert

The ultrasound said I was between 13 and 14 weeks right now. But she also said that could be off by a week either way at this point. The best time to tell exact date is between 8-12 weeks. So I was a little late for that. Here are some of the ultrasound shots. She had a hard time getting great ones because she said the baby kept doing flips and stuff. She said it was one of the most active babies she had ever scanned.

Nightmares!

I had a nightmare last night. It was quite strange, I don't know what brought it on. It is still very vivid in my mind. In the dream I was in an abusive relationship and I actually feared for my life. It ended with me getting away with the help of a group of women.

It woke me up abruptly at 6:30 this morning. I just layed there looking at Barry, thinking how very lucky I was! As I have been thinking about it this morning, I wonder if the Lord in his interesting ways of teaching us things, has said to me... Kathy, be grateful for what you have! I don't give my husband enough credit. He is a very sweet person! He is very loving. To this day I feel like he loves me as much, if not more than when we were married. That is a unique feeling for me compared to my previous experience :) I love him, he is a great husband!

I never though a nightmare could turn out to be a good thing :)

To blog or not to blog... that is the question!

I know, Random...

Just have to say this. Sometimes there are things that I wished people didn't blog about. Some of my friends know about this. I am a believer that your blog is your blog, but there are times when your blog may accidentally offend someone. I try not to do this, I hope I don't. I am just going to have to let this one go! If you think I am talking to you, your probably wrong :)

On another note. Had my first doctors appointment. Went fine except for the fact that Kyla ripped a big piece of paper off the exam bed and started ripping it into tiny pieces. She also found the stash for the papsmear stuff... that was exciting! She is so busy!!! From feeling my tummy, the doctor thinks I am 12-13 weeks. I will find out by ultrasound in the next few weeks.

Kyla went to nursery for the first time today! Yeah, what a blessing in my life! Barry and I sat and peeked our heads in every once in a while (without her seeing us). Just to get a good laugh. She was so happy in there just playing, and watching her at snack time was very cute! She is in her own little world! She is so fun, when I have enough energy to keep up!!! At least she keeps us laughing... Every day!

Count down till Tommy is home! Two more weeks. Whew, this has been a long summer without him! He is definently the sunshine in this house and we have missed him like crazy!!

Life is so short!

Did anyone hear about this tragic event downtown a few days ago during the windstorm? Prayers go out to that family! I can't imagine. If anyone is interested, my yoga instructor is doing a class on peace day in September completely devoted to an hour of meditation for this poor family. If you want to go, let me know :)

CALGARY -- A sudden, violent windstorm Saturday night appears responsible for the death of a child walking by the Calgary Tower after a piece of construction debris landed on a group of people.Paramedics said a three-year-old girl was killed, and a man and a seven-year-old boy were injured when they were struck by building materials in downtown Calgary.
The three had been walking together near the Calgary Tower at the time.
A fire department official said the material fell from as high as 40 metres.
"It (the sheet metal) flew from the building under construction . . . and into the group of people," said fire department spokeswoman Deb Bergeson.
"It probably would have been something they wouldn't have seen coming."
The man, in his mid-to-late 30s, was taken to hospital and the seven-year-old was transported to Alberta Children's Hospital.
Their injuries were non-life threatening, said EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux.
Firefighters secured the construction site and emergency crews shut down the street.
The incident, which occurred around 8 p.m., was seen by a crowd of horrified onlookers.
"This piece of the building fell off, blew across the street and I'm like ‘Oh, my God,' " said Lorne Markham, 27, who was just getting out of a cab when the wind came up. "We ran there (to the scene), we were running. . . . The screaming and yelling was too much."
Witness Dan Grandan said he was about a block away when incident occurred. He said the air was calm and then suddenly it was like a hurricane.
"It was physically moving me," he said. "It was crazy for five minutes and then died down."
He also saw some of the aftermath. A piece of sheet metal — which he described as steel decking about three metres by 1.5 metres — lay crumpled on the ground.
Another witness, identifying himself only as Richard, said he saw a woman running toward the body, but police held her back.
The tragedy was one of several chaotic scenes that resulted from surprisingly powerful wind gusts that hit the city Saturday night.
More than 3,000 Calgarians were out of power thanks to the sudden windstorm.
"We had several areas out of power where trees came down on power lines. There are still a couple areas without power," Enmax spokesperson Natika Sunstrum said about an hour after the winds descended on the city.
At least 1,200 customers in southwest Calgary and 1,700 in southeast Calgary saw their power shut off thanks to the storm, said Sunstrum. Calgary's 911 call centre was also flooded with calls of downed trees and other materials that had blown across streets, said Bergeson.
"The weather changed very dramatically," she said. "Several trees were toppled, construction material was flying around, power outages and (debris causing) generally unsafe conditions."
Winds started to pick up in Calgary around 7:45 p.m. and by about 8 p.m. the Calgary airport was reporting winds of 78 kilometres an hour, said Environment Canada meteorologist Andy Yun.
The wind storm soon moved on. By 9 p.m. the airport was reporting a nice breeze, but nothing more substantial, said Yun.

Anyone else experience bad stomach aches while pregnant?
I've never had this before.
It is similar to a typical bloated, bubbly stomach ache with lots of pain.
It's my second day having them off and on.
Normally I wouldn't think anything out of the norm, but while being pregnant... I freak a little.

Haven't been to the doctor yet, that happens on Friday.
From what I have "guessed" I am about 11 weeks tomorrow.
Can't wait for an ultrasound to determine date.
Still think I am going to let this one be a surprise.
Maybe I will do what Christy did and have the doctor told, just in case I change my mind.

My hunch is... that it is a boy.
My reason is, I was more sick with Tommy than with Kyla.
Sick being; with Tommy I pucked maybe 3 times and with Kyla not once.
I was also nauseous a lot with Tommy and with Kyla I just had horrible heartburn.

These stomach aches are new, and I don't like them... Any ideas anyone?

Terrible Two already?

I either have a smart child or a very naughty little girl. You wouldn't believe the things she gets into these days.

Most of my friends and family know that Kyla is a "messer." She gets into everything!
*I wake up this morning to her... diaperless. The diaper, that was a "bonus" as my father in law would put it, was found near the game closet. It was amongsts about 5 games that had been opened and scattered across the hallway. After picking them up, I find the good ol' poop smears on the carpet from her sitting down after removing her diaper.

*Not five minutes after that, I hear a little splash splash, well she is in the bathroom, dipping toilet paper into the toilet, then sucking on it... Ugh! I am pretty good at keeping doors closed, but every once in a while I miss one... and she finds it!
I don't know what I would do with her if she wasn't so stinken cute!
